Summary

Detective Harry McCoy is a great character and you never know what he will do next。 Great suspense。 I'm working backwards as only introduced to this series when I chose Alan Parks as a new author to me。 So glad I did。 Detective Harry McCoy is a great character and you never know what he will do next。 Great suspense。 I'm working backwards as only introduced to this series when I chose Alan Parks as a new author to me。 So glad I did。 。。。more

3。5stars, read as an audio book。Alan Parks writes a vivid story, often cruel and hard, noir。Harry McCoy Scottish detective tough but his policing skills are raw and real。Some aspects I found strong, as the storyline is hard。 This is the fourth of McCoy's crime books。 So whether his others are in similar vein ? I thought this book was the best of the series through # 4。 The author is getting stronger, the characters more fully formed, and the story more intricate。 It was a really fun read。

Harry McCoy returns with a sailor to find, bombings to figure out, a murder to look into and an old friend to pick up from Peterhead prison。In the fourth instalment of Parks' excellent series, he weaves a wicked web for Harry to find his way out of。 An American looking for his sailor son enlists the help of McCoy on a night out in Dunoon with Special Branch landing a case back on McCoy's desk noting the death by bomb making to not be related to Irish violence。 This time around we perhaps get les Harry McCoy returns with a sailor to find, bombings to figure out, a murder to look into and an old friend to pick up from Peterhead prison。In the fourth instalment of Parks' excellent series, he weaves a wicked web for Harry to find his way out of。 An American looking for his sailor son enlists the help of McCoy on a night out in Dunoon with Special Branch landing a case back on McCoy's desk noting the death by bomb making to not be related to Irish violence。 This time around we perhaps get less of McCoy as a character although you can see the hints of maturity as he needs to scale back some of his more hedonistic ways。 He and Wattie's partnership and friendship have been a wonderful part of the novels since the start and we see more of this than ever before。I heard Parks speak at the Edinburgh Book Festival about a month and a half ago and know he doesn't have a set out idea of where exactly the plot will go and I think that makes for exciting reading as much as anything else he does as you can be blindsided by plot points big and small and sees for the first time the novel ending on somewhat of a cliff hanger。 。。。more

Oundle Crime thinks this series is getting better with each instalment (this is Book 4)。 It’s still 1970s Glasgow and this story centres on a wave of bomb attacks, a spate of gangland killings and the hunt for a missing American sailor。 It’s an absorbing story with a good twist at the end。 Definitely Scottish Noir! This was the best of the series so far。 Four stars。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Honestly a really big hustle to read。 Finally finished it。 I really didn’t know where the story was heading and had no particular care for the cast of characters。 Nothing remarkable about them。 Even the end when McCoy started coughing blood I didn’t get what the essence was。 Anyway managed to finish it and now I can move on to other more enticing books。

I enjoyed this, the characters and dialogue were great, it lacked a little pace, but that helped the character development。There were some slightly trite elements, but the story pulled me in, and I wanted to find out how it was all going to be resolved。 I’d certainly read more in the series。

The first of my summer holiday reads this year was The April Dead by Alan Parks。 It's the fourth in the Harry McCoy series and it's another stunner in my humble opinion。 Things kick off with an explosion in a flat where the dead body of a bomb maker is found and there's evidence of a wounded victim who is nowhere to be seen。 Later explosions will put Glasgow on full alert and everything seems to point to a full-scale outbreak of carnage when April finally arrives。 Matters become more pressing wh The first of my summer holiday reads this year was The April Dead by Alan Parks。 It's the fourth in the Harry McCoy series and it's another stunner in my humble opinion。 Things kick off with an explosion in a flat where the dead body of a bomb maker is found and there's evidence of a wounded victim who is nowhere to be seen。 Later explosions will put Glasgow on full alert and everything seems to point to a full-scale outbreak of carnage when April finally arrives。 Matters become more pressing when links to the Irish paramilitary are suspected and the British secret services decide they're not happy about McCoy sniffing around too closely。 Steve Cooper, childhood friend of McCoy, is about to come out of prison and something seems off。 There's internal wrangling in the underworld and the only certainty is that things are not going to be sorted with handshakes and pats on the back。 And there's a missing American submariner from the US naval base whose father manages to grab McCoy's attention and has him investigating the case when he senses there may be overlaps between this and his other work。 The April Dead is thoroughly entertaining。 Time and place are created very strongly and it can seem as if Parks has picked you up and placed you directly in the scene so you can see, hear, smell and feel what's going on around you (think virtual reality without any technology)。 McCoy and Cooper are terrific characters and the way that loyalties and morals are played with when they get together adds a great extra dimension。 Plot is also terrific and the pacing is bang on。 There are places where apparent coincidences are stretched to the point of causing raised eyebrows, but those moments can be easily forgiven on account of the strength of the story and because of the complexity that these elements bring to the plot。 Seriously good and very entertaining。 Cracking Scottish crime。 。。。more

Is there an IRA connection? The novel is bleak and graphic, very much of its time period, with police corruption and dubious methods making a thin line between the law and criminality, a line blurred and sometimes crossed。 McCoy shares the difficult background of some of those he's required to lock up, and this can cause conflicted loyalties。 Though he appears tough as nails, he's really not, a good, instinctive detective, with a strong sense of right and wrong。 I liked him immediately, especially his caring attitude to those in need of help, regardless of who they are。It's not all bleak and dismal you will be relieved to hear。 Dark humour and down to earth 'Glesca banter' (tm Chewin' the Fat) alleviate the gloom in a novel more entertaining than its grim subject matter suggests。 I can't wait to read the rest of the series。 。。。more

My first read of Alan Parks。 There were three before this and I will go back and read them when I have more time。 Harry McCoy is a policeman in Scotland, but has long-time friends who are criminals。 He is a real cop and wants the world to be right。 The interesting, and good, thing about this mystery novel is that Harry sometimes believes the wrong people。 Because he is such a good guy, he assumes that others are better, nicer, more honest than they are。 And the author gives us Harry's thoughts a My first read of Alan Parks。 There were three before this and I will go back and read them when I have more time。 Harry McCoy is a policeman in Scotland, but has long-time friends who are criminals。 He is a real cop and wants the world to be right。 The interesting, and good, thing about this mystery novel is that Harry sometimes believes the wrong people。 Because he is such a good guy, he assumes that others are better, nicer, more honest than they are。 And the author gives us Harry's thoughts about trusting or believing others。 Harry often has doubts and worries if what he has heard is true。 So much worry that he even has an ulcer and refuses to treat it, refuses to tell people that he is ill。 He meets an American who is searching for his son, who is based on a carrier docked at a military base nearby。 The American has lots of money and misrepresents the sweet boy to Harry。 Harry agrees to help but before he can get started, bombs go off - in an apartment, a church, a brewery。 The interesting thing about this novel is that there are many clues (too many) and a lot of mis-information or lack of information。 I always want to discover the bad guy before the end of the book (a game I play with myself and the author)。 But in this case, so many leads have deadends。 The book gets a little wacky at the end but keep reading - only a few more pages until justice is done。 That is one of the reasons I like this book。 Justice。 I like anything that demonstrates justice in this world。 。。。more
